During pregnancy, the need for folic acid doubles to 400μg/day. Folic acid supplementation increases the mother’s folate status. A low folate status in the mother is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus. Because the increased folic acid requirement during pregnancy is difficult to meet through diet alone, it is recommended that women who wish to become pregnant take a folic acid supplement of 400 μg/day, at least 1 month before conception and at least until 12 weeks (3 months) after conception.
